- -Final Fantasy X
I always tend to mention that this game is pretty universally disliked. I love it, though. I love the storyline, and I like how you get to use EVERY party member for whatever particular job you need. The bad part? If you go through with the sphere grid, everyone essentially becomes the same character, being able to fulfill all jobs and essentially become invulnerable depending on the kind of equipment you have. This wouldn't be so bad if it didn't mean that you'd just one-shot every enemy you encounter (including the final boss) once you're able to break the damage limit. I personally prefer to play the No Sphere Grid files, in which, obviously, you don't use the sphere grid. As such, your stats never go up, and you're forced to use every character as originally planned. Battles are ALWAYS challenging, and entertaining. I still haven't been able to beat Braska's Final Aeon without the use of Trio of 9999 or Aeons, but I'm working on it!
-Final Fantasy Dissidia
Probably one of the most underrated fighting games of all time, especially coming from a company almost entirely specialized in the creation of RPG titles. I'm personally a huge fan of Dissidia, and fully support a potential sequel. In fact, I have started at least SEVEN friends on the game since buying it myself, including two that bought a PSP in order to play the game. They were NOT disappointed. Right now, I'm working on mastering Jecht's EXTREMELY precise combos, and it's a real challenge. However, it's also very rewarding- sure, he's only about as useful as any other character IF you can do his combos, but it's more entertaining- also, a couple of my friends tend to complain that certain combos are bullshit, so the fact that Jecht makes me work for his good moves sorta shuts them up.
-Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
This is a VERY unique game, and a very unique series as a whole. Being an Atlus game, you can tell one thing from the very start- it's going to be HARD. Persona 4 lives up to Atlus' reputation- the game starts off relatively forgiving to new players with weak enemies and tons of player advantages, before slapping you with the proverbial dick just when you think the game's going to be a breeze. There are a few mechanics which simplify battles a little, but every new dungeon is horrifyingly more difficult than the last. Thankfully, while you're on something of a time limit to finish each dungeon, you are usually given plenty of time to grind out levels and improve your Social Links, which help improve the power of your Personas as they're created, allowing you to take on dungeons with a little less pain. Did I mention that every copy of Persona 4 comes with its own OST for FREE? Great music. Try to get a NEW copy if you can to be sure you'll get the soundtrack in good quality.
-Bloody Roar 4
I miss Bloody Roar 2. 'Nuff said.
-No More Heroes
I admit that I have NOT played much of this game, but I also pretty much just got it. I WILL say that it's very interesting in terms of gameplay, though a little convoluted at times. It's also a very DIFFICULT game, as you'll quickly discover. No More Heroes has no qualms with throwing dozens of enemies at you all at once- and they know how to block! Not to mention, they have a tendency to group up on you and essentially stun-lock you, so don't let yourself get cornered. Also, I found the fact that your Wiimote was used as a cellphone speaker adorable.
-Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Shattered Memories is a re-imagining of the first Silent Hill. I will say right now that the graphics probably belong on a PS2. The shadows are very hard-edged, and everything is generally a little angular- animation-wise, it's actually pretty good. This was the first Wii game I had personally seen (I played this before No More Heroes) which used the Wiimote speaker in a creative way- I was amazed when the cellphone began speaking through my Wiimote as opposed to the television, as well as the radio static which lets you know when there are enemies around. Sadly, the gameplay can be rough sometimes. For one, it's very repetitive. You run around solving puzzles for a while till you enter a Wayward Point- a place where Silent Hill changes and you're forced to outrun enemies and essentially get from point A to point B without dying. There's NO combat whatsoever, so you pretty much have to run for your life, evading enemies and knocking off any that manage to catch you (they ARE faster than you). The most annoying part of the game, I think, is the positioning of the character in relation to the camera- he always happens to be DIRECTLY in front of the camera, making it even MORE difficult to see, since you're already forced to deal with fog and near ABSOLUTE darkness. You will run into a lot of enemies on accident because of this. Also, while moving around, your Wiimote may go off-screen and you'll start running dumbly in circles till you can manage to get it back on track. I haven't beaten the game yet, but so far, overall, it's enjoyable. The fact the the game runs a psychological profile on you throughout the whole thing is interesting, too. It's a safe, cheap buy- it started at about $30.
