You didn't hook Qwilfish.

The first number only determines if you caught something.

If you use the Good Rod, or Super Rod, a set amount (1 and 5, respectively) is added on to the three numbers to determine what you hooked.

Sami responded at like 2 AM, so she probably just skimmed what you asked.

Adding 1 onto 12, you hooked Staryu, but your chaining failed at the first number in the chain, so... eh.

Ok, So now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
