Art Contest!

Requirements:

-The banner shouldn't be huge--remember, it would be going in peoples' signatures. However, it shouldn't be tiny either. Make sure it can be read clearly.

-"Shuten Dojo" should be on it somewhere. You may add more text but the title of the website is mandatory.

-The URL isn't necessary but it might be a good thing to add.

-Deadline for entries is October 25th.

Prizes:

-First Prize: 10,000 yen, a trophy displayed in your profile, and any Pokemon or item from the Shuten Dojo Official Shop.

-Honorable Mentions: 5,000 yen.

How to enter:

Just post here or PM me by Sunday (October 12th). You'll need to PM me your banner by October 25th but I'll certainly accept earlier entries =). You may also PM me drafts that you're working on or design ideas if you want to make sure they fit the criteria.

Okay well here is my entry.

This took me 3 hours, and I had to learn a whole bunch of stuff like making Renders glow, background gradients, and text gradients. I hope it looks good, I really don't think so but I'm always critical on myself.

Better then mine.

Oh, graphic art? I thought this was going to be actual art, and I was like "Lol fuck that."

Well, you'd probably win by default, since I don't know if anyone else has artistic prowess. I sure as shit don't have enough confidence in my abilities on a canvas rather than a PC.

But anyway, I guess this will be my entry. Not entirely happy with the text size or general look, but I wasn't about to go hunting for a new font online.



Edit: I just noticed that the exact same fucking pose White Len is making, for the most part. What is it with Japanese artsits and the one arm out pose.

Also, Sage has artistic ability.

To All Those Who Think Graphic Design Isnt Real Art:

That thought alone shows how little you know about art in general. And I challenge you to go out get illistrator and free hand(no tracing) with the pen tool perfectly draw out a character from ..oh lets say an anime. pick something REALLY detailed. Come on dont be a pussy! After all graphic design isnt REAL art and takes no tallent anyways...(sarcasim) >.<

seriously... if you cant draw with a peice of paper you cant do it digitly either... There is no hope for you... I know first hand you need tallent to be a graphic artist. You need a very good eye for detail, and some people just dont have that. (seriously you think tobis art is bad you should see some people in my class)


anyways on the topic of this thread.

as sagechild stated, it can be hand draw, painted, digitly created, it really doesnt matter, its art!!!!!

Im just going to do a little critique. take this as healthy criticism to take in to consideration next time.


Shade: Beautiful banner, it seems from your post you have put quite a bit of time in to it. The weakest part is the background, but at the same time it makes it so the pokemon pop out more so im not sure if I'd get more flashy with the background or not. but i like the glow its pretty cool. (P.s. 'shuten dojo' seems crowded, maybe centering it would have been better)

Tobi: look at garchomp(thats its name right?) see how he is clean and there are no white fuzzys around him. Now look at machamp, see all that white junk? if you would just remove the white junk this would be one of your better pieces actually. You too could also make the background a bit more...interesting...instead of plan black.

Shiki: Your banners and sigs are all ways very good however, you never do anything different. There isn't really any variety... I mean look at your banner compared to your sig... just switch up the colors and the character and what the text says and its the same thing...

Shadchild: this one is pretty good, not sure if i like the art style of the gyarados to the right, but its pretty good. comparing it to your sig you sort of have the same problem as shiki. Good though.

Over all the entries are pretty good, hopfully more of you will enter in the contest.

I'm not sure we need to care about inter-artist variety.

We just need something that represents Shuten well.

To point it out, took me about 5 secs.

Copy and paste pics of machamp/ganochmop on pain, then powerpoint the words.

I did it for the lulz.

Yeah, mine was about the same. Use a brush pack I downloaded from DA, find stock image, Duplicate Layer, Filter >>> Blur >>> Gaussian Blur, Soft Light, and that's pretty much it. Probably twenty minutes tops, included uploading it to Photobucket and finding an image. Far from original, but this isn't a Sig of the Week competition, so originality takes backseat over aesthetics.

But don't get me wrong, I don't think all graphic design isn't art, just not banners and sigs. Because let's face it, a sig basically requires only three things: A background, a stock image, and text. Backgrounds are as simple as downloading a brush pack on a website and creating something with the brushes, text is as simple as downloading an appealing text set and typing what you desire, and as for stock image, most people also just copy and paste something from the internet and toy with its opacity/brightness/contrast/color/etc. etc. etc. That's not art, at least not in the traditional sense, that's taking things that other people have created and putting them together into something that you hope is appealing.

On the other hand, if someone were to create their own background, their own text, and draw their own stock image, that would be 100% art.

And drawing on Illustrator IS easier Sage, I can attest to that from drawing on a canvas and on the PC. Mainly because if you make an error in your brushstrokes, proportions, or shading, it's as simple as Ctrl + Z and wham, it's like the error never existed in the first place. On a canvas, you need to erase it, which takes away from the quality of the canvas surface and may not even get erased completely. Drawing on computer is easier simply because errors can be fixed easily, something a novice like myself does often.

I don't know what you were talking about.

I only have paint, so i'm not really GREAT on things like these.

However, i can copy manga to paint, edit out what i don't want, and put a new message in there, which is always fun.

I know i was just bored and wanted to critique someones work....

It's cool sage, we don't mind.

I vote for Shiki's as the winner however.

We have a couple people that haven't entered.

One I know is, and one I'm pretty sure is.
