Breath of Fire III was the second RPG I was ever exposed to (Final Fantasy VIII being the first), and the first RPG I'd ever played. To this day, it remains one of my all-time favorite games, and really one of my most sentimental.
You follow the story of Ryu, a boy with a foggy past and mysterious abilities. From childhood to adulthood, you collect, and lose, a variety of friends and companions, embark on wonderful and unique adventures, and see things the likes of had never been seen before by human eyes. You learn about your past, and what your presence could do to the world you've grown so attached to. Of course, the road isn't without trauma.
You take part in epic battles with a unique system of gameplay, exchanging blow after blow via a turn-based system, and learning new tricks on the way, apprenticing yourself to various Masters around the world so that you may reap the rewards of their far superior experience on your journey to justify your existence and save yourself from oblivion, all the while learning about your incredible heritage and abilities.
Over the course of the game, you'll learn enemy skills, go fishing, make Sushi, train a nerd to fight, raise a Faerie Village, encounter a Goddess, and so much more it's ridiculous. The gameplay is exhilarating, the environment is beautiful, the storyline is brilliant, and the emotions are infectious. The music does a wonderful job of conveying a moment and all its drama to the player, and even while being a 2-D game, it looks gorgeous.
Honestly, I consider this MUST buy game. Most don't seem to think so, but I believe this game really has a lot to offer to the RPG genre. It contains so many masterfully introduced elements, and the plot is just enthralling. One more thing that just about assures you a good game is the YEAR; 1998. If you ask me, 1998 was a GRAND year for RPGs. Look at Final Fantasy VIII, and Parasite Eve! I believe Legend of Dragoon was released about the same time, but I can't be sure...
Anyway, try it. It's awesome. I've been considering starting a new file, myself.
