Re: TODAY'S TOP NEWS.
The pound is more than the dollar. If it's ever lower, Britain is fucked sideways, because that would just be sad.
And the reason is a simple one. Our currency is on a fiat system, meaning that it is not backed by gold or silver, but rather, the government says it is worth x amount, and therefore it is. The pound, on the other hand, has a very real backing of tangible resources(gold and silver), so if their economy was ever to go through a depression, the pound still stays strong. The same cannot be said for America, because when we go through something like a recession like we are right now, the dollar becomes increasingly useless outside of our country, to the point where even the miserable Canadians currencies is equivalent to ours.
Of course, with America going through a recession, everyone else is feeling it too since our sphere of influence within other developed nations is so strong. In April if I recall correctly, the pound was worth $2 to our meager dollar, in August, it's at $1.80. Twenty cents may not seem like a lot, but that's only a four month period, and twenty cents down is quite disarming. Britain is feeling the onset of a recession too, hopefully they learn from our mistake and adjust their economy accordingly while they still have time.

Re: TODAY'S TOP NEWS.
Also, WTF.
In order to affect KY, Ike would have to have been approximately the size of 1/2 of the continental United States. JUST TO AFFECT YOU. And I'm not even talking about full on flooding and power outages.
If there had been flooding like you mentioned, Ike would doubtless at least have to have been the size of the Continental US plus a bit of Mexico, perhaps even possibly larger. I'm not a meteorologist, but the Storm Surge (which is the main attributable cause of flooding when hurricanes are involved, fyi) would not have reached inland that far unless Ike was at least that size. Otherwise, your argument has been rendered false.
Also, you would have commented earlier on your being absent due to Ike had it actually hit you. Had there been flooding and power outages, you would have been absent for a while from the Shuten Community, which, in fact, you were not.

Our Government doesn't screw us over as much, our currency is more powerful and we're generally alright for homelessness and unemployment.
So WTF is up with Hurricane Ike?

But the U.S. is FIVE places higher on the Human Development Index than the UK.

I don't exactly know how, but yeah....

Re: TODAY'S TOP NEWS.
Haha, HDI. Funny.
We had to learn all about that in AP Human Geo last year....
The entry on Wikipedia seems a to be lacking a bit in the calculations of the HDI....Rubenstein taught that the three main dimensions (which were subdivided into several other variables) were Economic (GDP, Employment Rate, Per Capita Income, etc), Demographic (Life Expectancy, Population Density, NIR, CBR, CDR, IMR, etc.) and Educational (Lit. Rate and enrollment, the only one that Wikipedia had right)
I don't know if this would change the standings at all, but....yeah.
You can compare the GDI (Gender Development Index) and the GEM (Gender Empowerment Measure) for the US and the UK, although you'd have to google it or find it somewhere else, because they don't have the actual statistics on Wikipedia.

Where's it headed?
We don't get proper hurricanes here in the UK because we chose to live in a country that doesn't systematically destroy our settlements.

Re: TODAY'S TOP NEWS.
because technically our government is still the ruler of all.... and the only real problum we have had is no jobs and no star bucks... so... yeah... but shiki is right your money is debt not actual money... that 5$ bill in your pocket is an IOU basically... thats why its a federal reserve note and not gold heheSagechild wrote:I feel really strange for being the one to call this.Shadchild wrote:And yet we seem to be managing better than you yanks...

Re: TODAY'S TOP NEWS.
My monies is worth moar than urz.
Nuff said.
If I had a time machine, I'd go back and copyright the english language (including all derivatives) and make a shitload of money off you peoples that speak it.
And if a hurricane really was half the size of the US, I have no doubts that all of you would be dead and I would be freezing my balls off, wondering how the earth managed to piss God off so badly...

I'm pretty sure the patent system wasn't in place half a millennium ago when the first colonies started popping up. Additionally, I'm pretty sure most languages are public domain.

Actually, you'd only really make money for 20 years, seeing as copyrights generally only last for 20 years. Then the material becomes public. Also, the copyright would run out in the event that you should....well, perish.
TO THOSE OF YOU THAT MIGHT THINK I AM WRONG: Phail. Look at Mickey Mouse for example. He has been copyrighted by Disney for a long while now, even though Walt is actually dead. This is because every time the copyright runs out, Disney gives Mickey a minor facelift and just copyrights it again.
Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright
Look at the first sentence.

The Jew did everything.
If you don't tell what we do to you little boy, you'll get into heaven.
If you kill and rape 100 13-year old girls, and then ask to be forgiven, you will go to heaven.
If you spend years trying to help people all over the world, but you are Buddist, you go to hell.
Way to go guys, you made a GREAT way of life.
