Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Empty Nuzlocke run: Sapphire

Post by Sasami Fri Jun 25, 2010 6:04 pm

About a week ago I started a Nuzlocke run in Pokemon Sapphire (my reasoning for choosing a Hoenn game was because Nuzlocke runs for GSC are HARD and I'm bored with Kanto at this point, lol, so no FR/LG...I chose Sapphire out of the three because I never owned it).

For those of you unfamiliar with the Nuzlocke challenge, here are the rules:

    1. If your Pokemon faints you must release it as soon as possible (the Pokemon is "dead").
    2. If all of your Pokemon faint, start over.
    3. You must nickname every Pokemon you catch.
    4. You may only attempt to capture the first Pokemon you see in each unique area (routes, caves, etc.). If you don't get it, tough luck.

There are also a number of optional rules and here are the ones I'm playing by:

    5. If a Pokemon with an HM move faints, you can't use them for that HM. In other words, if you get stuck without any non-fainted Pokemon who can learn an HM needed to progress, start over.
    6. You can't catch the same species of Pokemon twice (no duplicates, too boring).

Even though I've already been playing for a week, I figured I'd post here and there about my progress. I'm doing well but am so scared for the E4, hahaha.

I'll update the following as I progress and post updates (such as gym battles) separately:

    Current "main" Pokemon:

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa259
"Kip" the Marshtomp (Lvl.31, Route 101)

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa064
"Houdini" the Kadabra (Lvl.24, Granite Cave)

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa267
"Wyrm" the Beautifly (Lvl.25, Route 104)

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa264
"Ziggy" the Linoone (Lvl.22, Petalburg Woods)

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa130
"Koiqueen" the Gyarados (Lvl.25, Dewford Town)

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa067
"Sensei" the Machoke (Lvl.31, Route 112)

Pokemon that are also trained and used in certain
    situations/gyms:

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa316
"Nom" the Gulpin (Lvl.18, Route 110)

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa325

    Nuzlocke run: Sapphire Dpmfa313
"Sparkle" the Volbeat (Lvl.13, Route 117)

The first part of the game can actually be the toughest when doing a challenge like this. You often have to rely on one or two Pokemon, critical hits are more likely to screw you over (along with poison), and you need to be careful not to lose your starter. I did some level-grinding before Brawly in order to make sure nothing happened to Kip or Houdini--they're my two strongest. Houdini, by the way, was such a lucky catch. Ziggy had just found an Ultra Ball (Pick Up FTW) and then the first Pokemon to appear in Granite Cave was an Abra Smile.

As you can see, I'm raising as many Pokemon as possible. This way, it won't be a total disaster if I lose some of my main party members (I almost lost Wyrm once due to a random rock move...you just never know). Selfdestruct and Explosion (along with OHKO moves) are basically my worst nightmare. Kip almost got screwed over when a Voltorb blew up--thankfully I was a bit over-leveled at the time.

I'm in Lavaridge at the moment, about to challenge Flannery (if I win, that puts me at four badges). I'll update later on tonight and then again at the next gym/important battle (I don't even remember how the story goes for this game, lol).

That comment almost makes me want to start naming Pokemon after other members here XD.

I got the Wynaut egg (haven't hatched it yet so it's not named or anything) and beat Flannery fairly easily (Torkoal is annoying but couldn't really hurt Kip). I wandered around Hoenn for a while because I forgot what I was supposed to do next, lol. Then I remembered that I'm supposed to battle Norman. I know his Slaking is tough so I leveled Sensei, the Machop, for a while (to level 30) and evolved it. Having a Machoke made the battle easy, haha, and I used Koiqueen's Intimidate to help (otherwise a critical hit would kill Sensei). Now I have Surf, hurray! Koiqueen finally gets a water move, lol.

I forgot all about the Trick House so I spent a good chunk of time getting caught up with all the challenges there. I also swapped out my daycare Pokemon and left my new Cacnea (I ran into the desert real quick while training), Cactuar, there instead--along with Lil'Oink.

Tomorrow I'll be doing the New Mauville side quest and then continuing off to whatever the next town is.

Oh, and I learned that the glass flutes you can make from ash actually do stuff. I never really bothered with them so that was cool for me to learn. I got a TON of ash because I trained Sensei there (mass murder of Spinda, lol).

On a side note, I'm not sure if I should keep Cactuar. I recently found out that the desert is part of Route 111 so it may not count as it's own area. I might have to release him.

I've never actually heard of a pokemon game challenge before, but it sounds pretty nifty.

Still, I don't think I'd be able to do it for fear of getting "stuck" in a situation where an HM pokemon faints and I'd have to start over....

I always nickname all of my pokemon, lulz.

    Awwwww.......I'm dead.... >_<

The HM thing is an optional rule, plenty of people don't play by it. I just wanted the extra challenge.

I don't play by the "no items" rule, though.
